Create a Simple Fade In and Fade Out Animated Text Using Photoshop CS6

Today I will be teaching you a very simple method of creating animated text in Photoshop CS6 making it fade in and fade out.

Step 1)

Open Photoshop and go to File > New (or CTRL+N) to create a new document. I will be creating a 300 pixels x 250  pixels document at 72 pixels/inch resolution. Color Mode: RGB 8 bit. Background: White.

Step 2)

Select the horizontal type tool now and write your text in the middle of the document or wherever your prefer. Next you will need to create one more layer of text that will be fading in once that layer of text has faded out and center it perfectly in the middle of the first layer of text then click the eye ball on the layer to hide it for now. This isn’t required you can use a single layer of text and fade it in instead of the other layer when we get to that step.  I will be using font family: Arial, font style: Black, font size: 36px, anti-aliasing method: Sharp and Center Text.

Step 3)

Go to window tab at top and check Timeline to bring it up at the bottom then click on Create Video Timeline inside there.

Step 4)

We now need to convert the video timeline to Frame Animation by using the drop down menu in the top right hand corner of the timeline window > Convert Frames > Convert to Frame Animation.

Step 5)

Duplicate selected frames inside the timeline then set both frames to No Delay (0 sec.) using the dropdown arrow below them. Then choose the second frame we just duplicated and hide the layer in the layers palette to the right using the eyeball.

Step 6)

Now we want to use click on tween to the left of duplicate selected frames and use Tween with: Previous Frame, Frames to Add: 4, Layers: All Layers and Parameters: Position, Opacity, Effects checked which will leave us with a fading out animation effect.

Step 7)

With frame 6 selected duplicate the frame again then make a second word visible or the same word doesn’t matter. Then click on tween again using the same settings as Step 6 which will leave us with a fading in effect.

Step 8)

With frame 11 selected duplicate the frame again then make the text hidden and repeat the tween again which will leave us with a fading out effect again.

Step 9)

With frame 16 selected duplicate the frame again then make the original text (Tutorial) visible and repeat the tween again which will leave us with the final fading in effect to complete the animation with 21 frames but with frame 21 still selected we need to delete it by using the trash can icon at the bottom.

Step 10)

To finish the animation we will give it a brief pause when the text is at 100% opacity by giving frame 1 and frame 11 a 1 sec. delay.

Step 11)

Finally we will set the loop count to forever so the animation repeats itself then go to File > Save for Web > Make sure GIF is selected and click Save > Make sure images only is selected in the dropdown.
